MUNICÍPIO DE MELGAÇO

O Município de Melgaço- Geografia/Localização - No sudoeste do Arquipelago Marajoara, na microregião de Portel limitando-se ao norte com Portel, a leste com Breves e Bagre e a Oeste com Porto de Moz e Gurupá. está à 290km de Belem, Clima e Vegetação/ clima equatorial quente e úmido, com temperaturamédia anual 27º C.O, periodo mais chuvoso ocorre entre os meses de novembro a abril, suas terras são recobertas pela floresta amazonica, em seus diferentes niveis, mata de igapó, varsea e terra firme. Área 5.470km2. população urbana 3.302 rural 17.280 total 18.290 estimadamente. História - Originou-se de uma aldeia dos indios Arycuru. catequizados pelo Padre Antonio Vieira da Companhia de Jesus em 1653, foi construida no local uma Igreja sob a direção dos padres Manoel de Souza e Mateus Delgado. A Aldeia ficou sob a responsabilidade da companhia de Jesus até 1759, quando a Lei Pombalina os expulsou do Brasil. com a expulsão dos Jesuítas a direção dos Indios passou a ser exercida por um diretor de indios. Em 1758 a aldeia passou a condição de Vila, dado pelo capitão General do Estado Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado, que a denominou de Melgaço, em homenagem aos emigrantes portugueses, que chegaram de uma localidade de Portugal, chamada Melgaço. a partir de 1851. Melgaço por diversas vezes teve a extinção e restauração de sua categoria de Município, porém em 29 de setembro de 1961 atraves da Lei Estadual nº 2.460 foi criado o novo Município de de Melgaço.
